Payless Power : Electric company & provider service areas in Texas

Payless Power is one of a few doing-business-as names that are registered by Young Energy LLC. Young Energy LLC opened to the deregulated Texas retail electric market in 2005 to provide electric service across all deregulated areas, and currently only operates under the Payless Power name. Mio Electric, PAGA MENOS, Neo Electricity, and UNO ENERGY (Young Energy's other registered dba's) are seemingly only registered names and not plan-offering electric providers.

Texas residents can sign-up with a Payless Power energy plan who live within the deregulated electric utility company service areas, which include:

Oncor Electric Delivery
CenterPoint Energy

Texas-New Mexico Power (TNMP)

The "delivery fees" that are charged by each utility company are passed through to Payless Power customers (a standard practice for electric providers). The current utility company rates are:

Utility company tariffs in Texas : MARCH 30 2021
TDUTDU monthly base feeTDU ¢/kWh energy rate
AEP North$3.57/mo3.0078¢/kWh
Oncor Electric Delivery$3.42/mo3.4928¢/kWh
AEP Central$4.27/mo3.7458¢/kWh

Payless Power is quite consistent at offering a basic selection of Payless Power plans across Texas. For example, Payless Power Fort Worth (76118) and Dallas will have very similar electric plan products as Payless Power Houston.

Payless Power login (MyAccount) & App : Account management for customers

Payless Power customers are offered an account management portal using the MyAccount, Payless Power login platform. In MyAccount, customers are able to:

  • Set up (or update) Auto Pay for more efficient, on-time monthly payments
  • Make on one-time bill payment
  • Monitor energy usage
  • View current electric plan details
  • Manage contact details, like email addresses or phone numbers

If you're currently a Payless Power customer and have your Payless Power account number ready (along with your email address and billing zip code), register with Payless Power MyAccount to have on-the-go access!

Payless Power has yet to develop a Payless Power app, but the Payless Power login portal is made in a mobile-friendly format as well.

Payless Power outage : Phone numbers As a provider, Payless Power handles billing, new customer set ups, and transferring or ending service for current customers. In the event of an outage, customers must contact the utility company that services the area (since they are responsible for maintaining and repairing the electrical infrastructure) instead of Payless Power. What does Texas think? : Payless Power reviews & complaints

The statistical record of formal complaints filed by consumers against electric providers is managed by the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) of Texas. Over the last 6 months, Payless Power decently ranks as #32 on the list of the most formal complaints received against retail electric providers in Texas out of the 70+ registered REPs.

While most customers appreciate the limited range of Payless Power electric plans offered and their competitive rates, a handful of unsatisfied customers (60%) have found issues with billing. Even though Payless Power's billing department has received the most complaints, in the grand scheme, they're still keeping their customers happier than a majority of other electric providers.

Payless Power electricity rates & plans

All retail electric utility service areas in Texas are covered by Payless Power electricity plans, with an identical product offering (plans & rates!) across all deregulated utility companies. Check out what's offered below:

Oncor Electric Delivery
AEP Texas Central
AEP Texas North
Texas-New Mexico Power
CenterPoint Energy
SmarTricity Premier 12
SmarTricity Easy Choice

Fixed plans : Payless Power rates

The Payless Power SmarTricity Premier 12 plan

This Payless Power plan has a fixed rate that does not change over the contract term. However, the utility company's rate is subject to change between 2 to 3 times per year. So the plan's fixed rate is fixed but only to a certain extent.

Generally, fixed rate plans are a good idea if you are able to lock-in a good rate at the right time of year. Once the fixed rate contract is finished, unless renewed or terminated, customers are automatically switched to a variable rate, month-to-month plan - a typical action taken by most (if not, all) electric providers.

Retail electricity customers should choose a fixed rate contract of at least 12 months. Electricity prices per kilowatt-hour change throughout the year, and you may actually miss out on pricing when energy rates are low. However, because electricity rates tend to increase over time, sticking with fixed rates for longer periods may prove to be financially advantageous.

Some electric providers design (and offer) an all-costs-involved electric plan that essentially combines the supply & delivery charges (provider and utility fees) into a single-charge plan. Payless Power, unfortunately, does not currently offer this type of plan product.

Payless Power cancelation : Early termination fees If considering Payless Power as your next electric provider, it's worth noting the "Early Termination Fee" that is attached to this fixed rate electric plan.
12 months : $40

Variable rates : Payless Power rates

The Payless Power SmarTricity Easy Choice plan

A variable rate is an energy price (in ¢/kWh) that will likely change each month. A variable rate can be at the discretion of the electric providers that offer such plans, or they can set rules on the rate's variability - for instance, the variable energy rate changes alongside the wholesale price of energy.

The BEST thing about a variable rate plan is the ability to leave the plan and/or provider at any time without having to pay an "Early Cancellation Fee". Since providers are aware of variable rate-plan freedom, the energy price given in a variable rate plan is almost always higher than any fixed rate plan that the same provider will offer.

Renewable energy : Payless Power electric plans

Payless Power does not currently offer renewable energy plans/options

The non-renewable energy plans offered by Payless Power source 20% renewable content (the Texas average is 21%). Payless Power's 20% contribution level is notably high for a non-renewable energy plan, compared to other non-renewable energy plans on the market in Texas.

Payless Power plans : Minimum usage fees

Payless Power does not implement minimum usage fees in their plans

Plans which contain a minimum usage fee add an additional fee if a minimum level of energy usage is not met.

Generally, plans that have a minimum usage fee tend to not favor energy-conserving consumers or smaller households.

Besides the standard energy rate, any other "supply fee" (what electric providers charge their customers) is optionally imposed on customers. Many providers choose to charge customers these frivolous fees so as to discourage trying to save money by using less energy. The Payless Power plans available are designed to favor low energy consuming households.

Usage credits with Payless Power

Payless Power does not use issue billing usage credits in their plans

Big providers like Reliant Energy, TXU Energy, and Ambit Energy, use billing credits to promote higher levels of energy consumption of over a certain amount. Fortunately, with Payless Power, customers can be more conservative with energy consumption and will be billed a proportional amount for the reduced kWh use - Makes sense!

Similar to the minimum usage fee strategy, the plans that contain the billing-credit feature are targeted to benefit households that have an average-to-high monthly energy usage. The hassle with plans that implement additional charges or credits based on monthly energy consumption, is that customers on such plans should monitor monthly usage to get their best-priced, final monthly bill.

Base Charges with Payless Power

The Payless Power SmarTricity Easy Choice plan

The Payless Power SmarTricity Premier 12 plan

Both Payless Power plans contain daily base charge fees. The base fee / base charge is another optional charge that providers often choose to impose on customers. The charge appears to be consistent across Texas at $2.67 each day ($82.77 for 31 days), pre-tax. This charge is on top of a relatively high energy rate charge, and the TDSP's "Delivery charges".

Some electric providers -like TXU Energy and Reliant Energy- charge base fees on their plans, but there are many other electric providers (like Varsity Energy!) that also do not add the charge.

Payless Power electric Prepaid plans

The Payless Power SmarTricity Easy Choice plan

The Payless Power SmarTricity Premier 12 plan

Prepaid plans work exactly as they're called: Customers pay before consuming electricity and must keep a positive balance on their account in order to keep the lights on. In the case of the plans above, the SmarTricity Premier 12 & SmarTricity Easy Choice require service-starting payments of $75 & $49 (respectively) - which are then put toward energy consumption charges.

Prepaid plans are GREAT since they don't require a deposit to start up ( = no credit check!).
