Great Gatsby design style inspo from the Roaring Twenties (2023)

Ever you ever wondered what’s the historical period you would live in?

Nodoubts on this, I would go back almost one hundred years. Stepping inthe so-called Roaring Twenties. Ah, weaking up inNew York, of course.

Roaring Twenties is a term coined in the United States, although it has been translatedinto several languages as well: in France defined as années folles, in Spain as felices Veinte Años, in Germany as the goldene Zwanziger. All of the terms referring to an idea of energy, madness, enthusiasm, that has always fascinated me.

A dynamic decade of great changes, of new trends. This is the era of jazz music, of feminism, of great industrial development.

New York is the symbol of this crazy decade, with its skyline of skyscrapers, with a Times Square that has established itself as the center of the city in these years.

This is theNew York that framesGreat Gatsby story. A shimmering New York of skyscrapers, of parties, luxury. An exaggerated one, depicted in Gatsby’s home, in extreme contrast with the Lower East Side slums.

Vi siete mai chiesti in che epoca storica avreste voluto vivere?

Io non ho molti dubbi, tornerei indietro di un centinaio di anni. Quanti bastano per catapultarmi nei cosiddetti Roaring Twenties, i ruggenti anni venti. Ah, mi risveglierei a New York, of course.

Roaring Twenties come termine descrittivo degli anni venti è un termine coniato negliStati Uniti, anche se ha avuto le relative traduzioni in varie lingue: in Francia definita années folles, in Spagna felices Años Veinte, in Germania goldene zwanziger. In pratica tutti i termini rimandano a un’idea di energia, di felice follia, che contraddistingue il periodo prima della grande crisi del 1929.

Un’epoca dinamica, di grandi cambiamenti, di tendenze.Di musica (jazz), di femminismo, di grande sviluppo industriale.

E New York è il simbolo di questo decennio di folle sviluppo, con il suo skyline fatto di grattacieli in parte già compiuti in parte costruiti proprio in questi anni, con una Times Square che si afferma come centro pulsante della città.

La stessa New York che fà da sfondo alla storia del Grande Gatsby. Una New York scintillante, fatta di grattacieli, di feste, di lusso. Eccessiva sotto molti aspetti, in estremo contrasto con i bassifondi della Lower East Side e del suo fango della classe operaia, un altro mondo rispetto a quello delle grandi feste di casa Gatsby.

The film, directed by Baz Luhrmann, is inspired by F. Scott Fitzgeraldbook published for the first time in New York in 1925, soin the midst of the Roaring Twenties. And I must tell you that before I watched the movie, then I read the book, and then review the filmI watched the movie again.

As always, while with the book you can understandmuch more about the story characters, I loved the moviesettings and costumes, even in their excess (criticized a lot, I know) that pullsyourself in the middle of those New York roaring twenties, between colors, sounds, parties, excesses. In a glitzy and superficial society, that frames the story of an intense yet bitter love, the one fromGatsby to his Daisy.

I was absolutely fascinated by Gatsby (and DiCaprio interpretation, needless to say), by his incurable optimism: “He was the most hopeful people I’ve ever met.“, says the narrator Nick.

An optimistic yet decadent charm, the same one of the roaring twenties, a period which gave us so much in terms of design and style.

Let’s try being inspired by Great Gatsby design style?

Il film,diretto da Baz Luhrmann, si ispira al libro omonimo di Francis Scott Fitzgerald pubblicato per la prima volta a New York nel lontano 1925, ovvero nel pieno dei ruggenti anni Venti. E devo dirvi che prima ho visto il film, poi ho letto il libro, per poi rivedere nuovamente il film.

E, come sempre, mentre con il libro si riesce a conoscere molto meglio i personaggi, del film ho apprezzato le ambientazioni e i costumi, seppur nel loro eccesso (anche molto criticato) che ti catapulta nel mezzo della New York degli anni Venti, tra colori, suoni, feste, eccessi-appunto. In una società sfarzosa e superficiale, che fa da cornice alla storia di un amore intenso quanto amaro, quello di Gatsby verso la sua Daisy, reincontrata dopo tantianni di lontananza: un amore per cui lui rinuncerebbe a tutto, lei un po’ meno, nella sua superficialità e attaccamento al lusso assicuratole dalla vita matrimoniale (nel film), nella sua continua indecisione e debolezza (nel libro).

Sono rimasta affascinata dal personaggio di Gatsby (e dall’interpretazione di Di Caprio, manco a dirlo), dal suo inguaribile ottimismo, dal suo essere in realtà diverso dalla società che lo circonda.“He was the most hopeful people I’ve ever met.”, dice di lui la voce narrante di Nick.

Fascino che si va a sommare a quello verso il periodo storico degli anni Venti, che ci ha dato in eredità tantissimo in termini di design e di stile.

Although I must say thatArt Deco style is certainly not among my favorites, the Roaring Twentiesleft many influences in interior design that can be found even in the present day.

For the first time, houses have been furnishedwith clean lines, with a linear style, withsoftened edges. This does not remind you of many curvy edges we see at present in design? Then, a first use of black and of bold colors, together with metal surfaces. Steel as a symbol of a period of rapid industrial development.

These werealso the years of the Bauhaus, the school founded in Weimar in 1919 proclaiming the“beautiful, functional and practical.”An opposition to those art deco glitterings and excesses- more up in my alley, this one.

However,a party in aGreat Gatsbytheme would not be so bad.

Anche se devo dire che lo stile Art Deco non è certo tra i miei preferiti, i ruggenti anni venti hanno lasciato delle influenze nell’ interior design che possiamo ritrovare ancora nei giorni nostri.

Per la prima volta, si iniziano a vedere arredi dalle linee geometriche e pulite, anche se si tratta di uno stile lineare, ma addolcito da curve: gli spigoli non sono graditi. Non vi fa pensare a molte delle forme che vediamo anche ai giorni nostri? L’utilizzo del nero e di colori forti, ma anche di superfici metalliche.L’acciaio diventa protagonista e simbolo di un periodo di veloce sviluppo industriale.

Questi sono anche gli anni del Bauhaus, la scuola che nasce a Weimar nel 1919 e si oppone all’ornamento e sostiene invece il concetto di “bello, funzionale e pratico“. Un concetto opposto a quello dell’art deco e del suo scintillio sfarzoso, pure un po’ più nelle mie corde, direi.

Certo un’intera casa magari no, ma una festa in tema Grande Gatsby non sarebbe proprio male.
